12symbolic animals-马年-Study Chinese Culture

“shu” refers to names of any of the 12symbolic animals associated with 12-year cycle, and is often used to denote a person’s year of birth. These 12 animals are rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.

2014 is the year of the horse.

It is said that horses in ancient times had wings and they were called Pegasus. Pegasus acted pretty wildly as it was favored a lot by the Heavenly Emperor. One day, it attempted to barge into the Dragon Palace killed a general during the chaos. A heavy punishment of cutting off its wings and be pressed under Mt.Kunlun for 300 years was appointed to it. 200 years later, the ancestor of human being passed by Mt.Kunlun. Pegasus implored to the ancestor that it would serve human being with all its life he could help it out. The ancestor agreed and released it. In appreciation of the ancestor’s help, Pegasus accompanied him to the human world and served human being whole-heartedly. Since then, horses and human being had become good friends. Later when the Heavenly Emperor wanted to choose twelve kinds of animal as zodiac, horse was recommended by man to be on the list.
